My Decision Against Further Breast Screening:
It’s been 9 months since I posted the results of a biopsy in which doctors found no cancer but wanted to run more tests. I still remember the fear that phone call sparked. I still remember the question – why would they want to take another biopsy if there was no cancer. To see my original article, go here.
I think it has taken all this time to process just exactly what happened and have an understanding of the lessons I learned. I believe I also waited to write about my course of action because I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision. I’m confident I did.
That call made me question the guidance of my primary care physician. Could she be wrong to recommend another invasive procedure for what seemed like nothing more than a stab in the dark? I sought guidance from other experts in breast health, notably Dr. Christiane Northup. I have read several of her books including Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Gift of Menopause. I have also read through many of her articles including “Breasts-What Every Woman Needs to Know.“ I even “chatted” with her, right after the call from my doctor, on her live internet show Flourish on Hayhouse Radio. I read books on cancer prevention including Five To Thrive by Lise N. Alschuler, ND, and Karolyn Gasella and Better Breast Health for Life by The Breast Health Education Group. I also spoke with my best friend who went through something similar several years ago. I ultimately chose to follow their wisdom and I did not return for another biopsy.
